Christmas is a great time for making things. So what better reason to introduce my oldest daughter to the lathe in this newest Adventure in the Workshop? She makes a Christmas Tree Tealight Holder from walnut. Her patience for sanding is not the best, but as she says, this way you know you made it yourself.
You can never have enough Christmas decoration, right? There is a technique called “Reifendrehen” that involves a lathe, but you can use the basic principle to make a bunch of similar pieces on your table saw as well to produce mass ornaments. I wanted to clock some lathe practice while making a Christmas ornament. The Balance Tree is the result of that paired with my desire to use different wood species to make things look more interesting as well as adding a hopefully unexpected twist to it.
